Member Spotlight

Amber Frey is the current President and Social Media Manager of the UC San Diego chapter of Tau Sigma and transferred to UC San Diego from Diablo Valley College.  Amber is an honors student in Linguistics with a minor in Latin Literature.  She is currently on track to graduate magna cum laude this spring and was recently named a recipient of a $4,000 scholarship from Tau Sigma (one of the highest awarded).

How have you benefited from your membership in Tau Sigma?

Being a transfer can be very hard and it can feel like you don’t quite fit in anywhere. Tau Sigma at UC San Diego has given me a community where I can connect with other transfers over our shared experiences. It’s also a place where we can celebrate our accomplishments and help each other continue to succeed. I’m very grateful for the friendships, opportunities, and skills I’ve gained by joining Tau Sigma.

Advisor Spotlight

Lashay Vazquez works at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida where she assists students with career exploration and professional development and where she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. When she’s not advocating for transfers or planning inductions, she spends her time traveling and training her new puppy, Miguel.

“How have your transfer students most benefitted from UCF’s Tau Sigma chapter?”

With UCF having over 70,000 students and about 50% being transfer students, Tau Sigma Zeta along with another transfer-focused organization, Transfer Knights, were able to sit at the table with university leadership to advocate for the opening of a Transfer Center. Due to their advocacy, diligence, and courage to speak up, we now have a new Transfer Center that focuses on the transfer experience. Through this experience, they have learned that they are not just an honor society for transfer students, but an agency of change and growth for anyone who identifies themselves as a transfer student at our university.
